Coimbatore: Coimbatore municipal corporation has decided to replace push carts that are used to collect garbage with light commercial vehicles and electric vehicles very soon. The city corporation said that it will receive 105 light commercial vehicles in the month of November which will be deployed in the various wards. Addressing the media, the Corporation commissioner M Prataph said that each of these light commercial vehicles are costing Rs 7.45 lakhs. Therefore, they have spent a total of Rs 7.82 crores in purchasing these 105 vehicles.
Prataph said that the basis on which these vehicles were selected was on their ability to carry out door to door garbage collection. Regarding the electric vehicles he said that they were chosen because they are environmentally friendly. They are also smaller in size which makes it easier for them to collect garbage even from congested areas and narrow streets, which will help in cleaning the city better, Times of India reported.
Thirdly, the use of these new vehicles will also make life easier for the employees as they will no longer have to slog out in the hot and humid weather. Pushcarts will soon be a thing of the past, Prataph said.
Recently, the civic body proposed to procure 600 dumper bins as most of the bins in the city are already damaged. At several places there are no dumper bin available, making it difficult to keep the city clean.
The commissioner said out of the 600 bins, around 450 had arrived in batches already. There was a delay due to scarcity of steel due to the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war. The remaining bins were expected in a few weeks, he said.
